“And here I thought you’d be crying your eyes out over me.” He stood with his feet braced apart, thumbs hooked in his pockets, smiling down at her.
Bianca sat up and brushed her tears away. “A hombre like you is not worth crying over,” she sniffed.
He dropped to the ground beside her and put a strong arm around her shoulder, drawing her close.
“You know, amigo,” she whispered, “just because you have a wife does not mean you cannot come to Mexico to visit your Bianca, does it?”
“Do you think I could stay away from that beautiful mouth?” he replied, brushing a finger lightly across her parted lips. “Or that fantastic mane?” He ran a hand across her cheek to grasp a handful of jet black hair. “Or these?” Slipping his arm from her, he gently cupped her full breast in his hand and brought his mouth down on hers.
She responded by melting against him, but before the kiss could lead to anything more, he flipped onto his stomach and pressed his ear to the ground. The earth reverberated with the sounds of hoof beats. “Someone’s coming.” He grasped her hand and pulled her up beside him. “Let’s go.”
A horse and rider came thundering into the valley. When Nando saw Pierce Morgan fling himself out of the saddle and race inside, he dropped Bianca’s hand and ran down the hill. Something was wrong. He felt it in his gut.
The men were huddled around the table when Nando flung the door open with a loud burst. He walked into the cabin, eyes flicking from man to man. A glint from the table caught his attention. Squinting at its brightness, his gray eyes widened at the sight of the silver necklace whose broken links indicated it had been snapped by force.
“Where did this come from?”
Pierce Morgan stepped forward. His lips were cracked from the blazing sun and his face plainly showed the strain of his rigorous ride. “Nando, I got here as fast as I could.”
“Where did you get this?” His voice was razor-sharp and accusing. Sweeping the broken necklace off the table, he held it in his clenched fist and shook it threateningly in the other man’s face. His voice sounded like the roar of a wounded animal. “It’s hers!”
